I am in the Australian bush with a landline that delivers at a slow 19kbps over a line that crackles when it rains.

I am checking out 2 way satellite broadband, and want to get my telephony on board the sat as well -- if not 2 way, then at least voice calls out, and mostly one at a time. Calls in and fax out (occasional) can all go via the existing landline. Apparently there's a problem getting a phone number for VoIP services, only an IP address that can't be rung from a house phone, so I plan to keep the existing service, crappy as it is, for call inward, and maybe faxes out, if they are a problem on VoIP.

With the VoIP, I don't need crystal quality, but I don't want too much background noise either, and it must be LOUD all the time. The present service drops to a whisper.

The cheapest server I have found is NewSat who says they can deliver untimed calls all over Oz for 19c (cities) and 29c (regional).

But to do this, they claim I need a 128/64 unlimited "Carrier Plus" plan costing $491 / month, plus an Octtel gateway costing $791, as well as the dish and Linkstar eqpt.

If I drop down to a cheaper plan -- "you will require at least a 128/64 "Enterprise Plus"uncapped plan @ $228.00 a mth to support this, however we cannot guarantee QOS on this plan."

Is this in fact correct? If all outgoing calls are made from a pc, is there any real need for an analog gateway? I understood these are only needed if one is using analog phones and fax machines. So is there any cheaper alternative generic stand-alone hardware I can use as a telephone when computer is switched off?

Also, I had understood that VoIP does not require great speeds, bandwidth, or masses of data to function adequately. Is this right, or not?
